Popis: | The article analyzes the archaeological studies of medieval cave monuments in the Inkerman (Crimea) by Turvont Venediktovich Kibalchich in 1886 and the activities of the Imperial Archaeological Commission for the preservation of archaeological heritage. The study was based on the principles of historical and anthropological approach. The author uses unpublished documents from the funds of the Manuscript Department of the Scientific Archive of the Institute of the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences (St. Petersburg) as the main sources: official letters of the Imperial Archaeological Commission, answers of the Tauride province administrative officials and the reports. Turvont Kibalchich was a well-known collector of archaeological finds. He had experience in field archeological researches. In the mid 1880’s he initiated the reproduction of the cave church of St. Clement of Rome (Inkerman) in the crypt of the church of Theodore the Sanctified (Kiev). In the autumn of 1886 Turvont Kibalchich carried out field measurements the cave medieval church of St. Clement monastery in Inkerman. The monument was reproduced in Kiev. Besides, the archaeologist-amateur studied the cave churches on the left bank of the river Chernaja and curried a limited archaeological excavation on an area of about 9 m2. The special Kibalchich’s report (“Act”) contains the information about his research, the description of negative impact of the anthropogenic factor on the medieval cave structures and proposals for their protection. The archaeologist believed the servants of the St. Clement monastery in Inkerman provided the protection of the sites on the left bank of the river Chernaja if the monastery will be its owner. The local Sevastopol’s newspaper published the information about Turvont Kibalchich excavation. The Imperial Archaeological Commission initiated an investigation. The letters were sending to the local administration and the Academy of Arts. The author concludes that the Turvont Kibalchich studies of medieval sites in Inkerman provided the popularization and actualization of these objects. There is limited important his excavation and efforts in the sphere of Inkerman antiquities protection. The Imperial Archaeological Commission investigation of the Kibalchich activities is the interesting example of the Commission’s supervisory functions in the archaeological heritage protection. |
