Popis: Low birth weight is a well-known risk factor associated with increased neonatal morbidity and mortality. Identifying low birth weight at birth is a prerequisite for any kind of intervention designed to improve neonatal survival and the future outcome of underweight infants. Many deliveries in developing countries however occur in the home where adequate facilities to weigh infants do not exist. Every newborn must nonetheless be weighed or evaluated by a method which helps to identify low birth weight. The authors report findings from a study conducted to determine which anthropometric measurement or measurements could be substituted for weight to identify neonates with low birthweight at birth. 874 neonates of 32-43 weeks gestational age born January-August 1988 at Van Maternity Hospital a state hospital in the eastern part of Turkey were measured within 24 hours of birth to assess the validity of anthropometric measurements. Low birth weight was observed in 10% of the neonates. A significant correlation was found between chest circumference mid-arm circumference head circumference length and birth weight although maximum correlation was found for chest circumference and mid-arm circumference. A chest circumference of less than 30 cm and a mid-arm circumference of less than 9 cm had the best sensitivity and specificity for identifying neonates with a birth weight of less than 2500 g. Chest circumference and/or mid-arm circumference may therefore be used as simple and reliable indicators for predicting low birth weight whenever the weighing of newborns is not feasible.
