Popis: | Introduction Prediabetes (PD) represents a transitional state where the glucose levels are higher than normal but not enough for diabetes mellitus (DM) diagnosis. Since there is a growing number of population suffering from PD, its early detection and treatment could prevent the development of DM and its complications. We aimed to assess the overall knowledge on PD among medical professionals of different variety. Materials and methods A questionnaire based study addressing PD and type 2 DM knowledge among South-Eastern Europe general practitioners, post graduates (PG) physicians and superior specialists was conducted. Results Three hundred ninety seven physicians fulfilled the questionnaire. Total rate of correct answers in diabetologists, non-diabetologist internists, residents and general practitioners (GPs) was 69%, 56.1%, 54%, 53%, respectively. Question related to the PD definition achieved in total 46.6 % of correct answers. Correct responses considering numerical definition of impaired fasting glucose (IFG) and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) were 46.3% and 46.8%, respectively. Younger physicians had better knowledge of numerical values regarding PD and type 2 DM criteria (p< 0.001). Conclusion Our results indicate that overall knowledge on PD is poor among South-Eastern physicians which requires adequate educational programs on PD in this region.
