This contribution provides an overview of the performance and retention characteristics of high-performance layers in the form of precoated plates for thin-layer chromatography. The dominant stationary phases are based on silica gel and chemically modified forms of silica gel with alkylsiloxane-bonded, 3-cyanopropylsiloxane-bonded, 3-aminopropylsiloxane-bonded, and spacer bonded propanediol surface treatments. Cellulose and esterified forms of cellulose represent minor use by comparison. Stationary phases for enantiomeric separations are largely based on the use of esterified forms of cellulose and reversed-phase layers impregnated with copper(II) complexes for ligand exchange chromatography. Sorbent properties that contribute to the performance of particle-packed layers are identified and the retention characteristics of the different sorbent types discussed. |
