Popis: | The absence of somatic mitosis is demonstrated experimentally in imagoes of Drosophila subobscura. However, DNA synthesis in the nuclei of mid-gut cells, and occasionally other tissues was observed. At all period of the life-span studied, there were approximately 12 times as many DNA-synthesizing mid-gut nuclei in old flies as in young ones. The evidence suggests that this DNA arises during the formation of polytenic chromosomes. Treatment with alkylating agents or irradiation of young flies induced increased DNA synthesis in the mid-gut nuclei. Irradiation but not treatment with alkylating agents produced similar results in other tissues. The possible significance of these results is discussed. |
