Popis: Purpose – This paper aims to provide information about Interdisciplinary Research related to the constitution of teams, funding search, barriers, and how these issues influence their research activities) through the characterization of the actual stage in terms of the effective involvement in IDR practice in the process in which a team science achieves solutions for energy and sustainability matters. Design/methodology/approach – The paper presents an exploratory study using a qualitative approach, including interviews with researchers leading projects and knowledge management experts, besides, as an inquiry and workshop about “The praxis of interdisciplinary research in the context of the EfS Initiative: a first approach” were carried out within the research network. Findings – The results showed that IDR practice has a high impact on researchers' professional paths. The primary motivation among researchers in conducting IDR is the search for solutions to real-world problems that affect social/economic development. Among the identified factors representing a difficulty for practicing IDR inside teams, were: team engagement, research priorities, communication and background–language differences, reconciling different disciplinary norms and practices (background-culture), and identification of partners for collaborations. Practical implications – The paper includes implications for developing a Knowledge Management strategy to increase the efficiency of the collaborative process intrinsic to IDR science team initiatives focused on sustainable development goals. Originality/value – This paper fulfills an identified need to study how IDR teams-science initiative achieves solutions for energy and sustainability matters.
