Popis: | The effect of a silk suture IUD on incorporation of (carbon-14)-glucose into RNA lipid and protein was examined in ovariectomized rats intact rats and rats 5 and 10 days pregnant treated with estrogen and or progesterone. Glucose uptake was analyzed 4-6 weeks after surgical insertion of the sutures by incubating 3 pieces of uterine horns separately in Robinsons medium for 2 hours with 1 mc Ci glucose. More glucose was incorporated into RNA lipid and protein in IUD horns than in control horns in untreated ovariectomized rats and in rats given 5 mcg estradiol-17beta ip 6 hours before but less glucose was incorporated in the IUD horns of rats given 2 mg progesterone or progesterone with estradiol. Label appeared in protein similarly in ovariecomized rats given 1 mg estrone for 9 days or 1 mg estrone for 9 days and 3 mg progesterone from Day 6 to Day 9 sc; i.e. increased uptake of label in estrogen treated and decreased in progesterone treated IUD horn relative to contralateral horns. Label in lipid RNA and protein was lower in IUD horns than in pregnant horns on the fifth day of pregnancy at the presumed time of implantation. The authors postulated an "estrogen like response and sensitivity to progesterone" in the uterus bearing an IUD. |
