The globalization of the economy, the international maritime labor market creation led to a paradigm shift in the vocational education and seamen’s occupational activities on the basis of a competence approach, the formation and development of seafarers' professional competence. In the new conditions professionally important psychophysiological qualities, individual and personal properties and seafarer's health potential belong to a dominant role. However, the main provisions of the new approach are till now not enough clearly formulated, the content of the key health-saving competence (HSC), criteria and methods of evaluation need of substantial improvement. The purpose: to summarize the results of our own researches in comparison with the literature data on clarifying the concept of HSC of seafarers, to determine its place in the professional competence of ship operators for more effective use in solving problems of increasing the health potential and quality of production activities of Ukrainian seamen and seafarers generally. Materials and methods. The study was conducted among 242 sailors aged 19-50 years, and 209 cadets of the National University "Odessa Maritime Academy" during the period of training and sea practice, medical and psychophysiological examination on a voluntary basis in accordance with the requirements of bioethics. Psychophysiological studies were conducted on more than 30 indicators based on professiography, questioning and tests using the computerized complex "Mortest" in the modification "SPAS-14", as well as blank tests in the dynamics of training in a marine university and work on long-distance vessels. The obtained data were compared with expert assessments of the success of training and readiness for professional activity. The results were processed by variation, correlation and factor analysis using a standard software package in Microsoft Excel. Results and discussion. The carried out researches confirm and supplement the data of the literature that HSC solves problems of maintenance of efficiency, safety, quality of sea work, reliability and optimization of quality of life of the crew.
