In the late 1960's, inspired by the work of the Deserted Medieval Village Research Group and the research by John Hurst and Maurice Beresford at Wharram Percy, the site of Novum Rollarium was the first Deserted Medieval Village to be archaeologically studied in Flanders. Despite several small-scale excavations, no insight in the settlement morphology nor in its geographical environment is available. Historical research, however, ascribed a planted origin in the context of high medieval landscape reclamations within the county of Flanders. According to historian Adriaan Verhulst, planted grouped settlements with a planned row morphology were of significant importance in the exploitations of newly reclaimed lands. This paper presents the historical geographical aspects of an ongoing cross-disciplinary landscape archaeological research on the village within its broader European research framework on medieval planted settlements. This allows a first interpretation of the location, extent and morphology of the village itself as well as an introduction to a wider understanding of the origin and dispersal of these planted settlements across Europe.
