Popis: | Five cases of squamous cell carcinoma infiltrating the mandible are described in elderly animals; 4 in cats and 1 in a dog. In 4, no local oral lesion was seen either clinically or at necropsy and in 2 the epithelium overlying the lesion was histologically normal. In 4, the radiological features suggested new bone formation or osteogenic sarcoma, and histologically a fibroblastic and osteoblastic lesion was present. It is suggested that occasional squamous carcinomas may arise from dental residues and that evidence of new bone formation on x-ray in the absence of a local oral lesion might indicate such an origin. |
