Popis: | Background/purpose Retinal toxicity associated with antimalarial drug use in inflammatory conditions is well described and may be more common than previously recognized. Antimalarial drugs bind to melanin in ocular tissues, particularly the retinal pigment epithelium, but the mechanism of toxicity and its relation to light is unclear. Methods Case report. Results A 62-year-old white woman with erosive rheumatoid arthritis developed hydroxychloroquine toxicity in her phakic eye, with her aphakic fellow eye only mildly affected. Conclusion We report the clinical evaluation of this rare case of asymmetrical hydroxychloroquine retinopathy and present a hypothesis regarding the mechanism of drug toxicity. |
