Popis: With the advent of globalisation, the Indian financial market is evolving rapidly. The time value of money is on the rise as well and so the investors from the middle income strata is striving more and more to invest their money in such a manner so as to receive maximum return on investments. Mutual funds are one such financial instrument which is widely popular because of its low risk. The objective of this paper is to understand the impact of mutual funds on the perception of the common people and also, a comparison needs to be done with that of the other financial instruments present in the market today. 200 samples were collected from the common population and it was analysed by using MS Excel 2007. The findings of the study reveal that mutual funds are a very lucrative investment option for the common people. In fact, it is much more preferable as compared to other investment options like stock, bonds, etc. due to its low risk nature. This result is valid for the urban areas of West Bengal as the samples were collected within this area. Further studies could be carried out in other parts of India to get a national perspective on this particular topic.
