Popis: | This chapter covers the secret recipe of a “homemade” intraocular lens, from its conception to its delivery on the market. This extraordinary exercise was possible, thanks to the close collaboration between the inventor (MJT), the engineer in physics (LG), the Antwerp University department (SND), and the industry, in this case Morcher, Germany. We describe the relevant clinical results, including the postmortem examinations, showing what happens in the patients’ capsule after BIL implantation. The incidence of the clinical parameters, required by the ISO standard 11979-7:2006 in place at the time of the introduction of the BIL, shows the excellent position of the BIL compared to the traditional lens-in-the-bag (LIB) intraocular lens (IOL) for all parameters. The superiority of the BIL compared to the LIB is clearly the prevention of visual axis reproliferation or PCO. Additional particularities and advantages of the BIL include surgeon-controlled lens centration, lens tilt following the natural crystalline lens tilt, and rotation stability. These parameters were prerequisites prior to thinking about conceiving a toric BIL or even a complex optic IOL like a diffractive BIL. |
