Popis: 103 The family Elephantidae showed a high rate of evolution, early stages of which were confined to Africa, while later stages occurred in Eurasia (the genera Elephas L., 1758; Archidiskodon Nesti, 1825, and Mammuthus Burnet, 1830). The earliest members of the family (assigned to Primelephas gomphoroides Maglio, 1970) were recorded in eastern Africa at the Miocene–Pliocene boundary [1]. The earliest known Elephantidae (ca. 4.5 Ma) came from the Lower Pliocene strata of Kenya and South Africa [2], which should be dated at most 4 Ma ago [3]. Further divergence of these elephants resulted in the development of three lineages, including loxodonts ( Loxodonta Blumenbach, 1799), elephantoids ( Elephas Linnaeus, 1758), and true mammothoid elephants ( Archidiskodon–Mammuthus ). In our opinion, only Middle and Late Pleistocene representatives of mammothoid elephants should be assigned to the genus Mammuthus , while earlier members of this lineage belong to the genus Archidiskodon.
