M ANY instructors have felt that students should not dislike patients. Formerly, we did not permit students to express their distastes for patients or their so-called negative feelings about patients. If they did, we made them feel guilty for expressing them. One positive move toward the teaching of attitudes is making it safe for students to express their real feelings about patients. According to educational theory, this is logical. If one is to begin where the learner is, one must find out where he really is. The feacher needs to provide opportunity for students to express what they feel and explore the origin of these feelings before she is in a position to offer new experiences that make it possible for students to change. With the help of 28 junior students in a 4-year collegiate nursing school program, we tried to identify what these student nurses disliked in patients. The students were able to identify five major dislikes related to working with patients. These are the problems involving dislikes as the students saw them. |
