Popis: The presence of IgA antibody has been demonstrated in various secretions [1, 2], and in nasal secretions it has been correlated with protection against infection with influenza virus [3]. In the intestine the presence of IgA antibody against polio virus has been demonstrated after oral immunization with live attenuated polio vaccine [4]. Although many researchers in cholera have analyzed intestinal secretions or stool for the presence of antibody, none has attempted to analyze individual immunoglobulin types for the presence of antibody activity. Since cholera is one of the few infections that is thought to remain entirely confined to an epithelial surface, it seemed likely that IgA in the intestinal secretions from cholera patients would be likely to exhibit antibody activity. Following the demonstration of IgA of both secretory and nonsecretory types in cholera stool [5], it was decided to investigate changes in antibody activity in intestinal immunoglobulins during the course of cholera, and to correlate these with changes in antibody activity in serum immunoglobulins. The evidence of enzymatic degradation of immunoglobulins in cholera stool [5] made it desirable to utilize a method that would demonstrate antibody activity at its simplest
