Popis: RINCIPLES OF HBO THERAPY he oxygen-carrying capacity of blood depends on the xygen bound to hemoglobin and the oxygen dissolved n plasma. One gram of hemoglobin can bind 1.39 mL f oxygen. The amount of oxygen that can dissolve in lasma is proportional to the partial pressure of oxygen PO2) (Henry’s law). In addition, 0.003 mL of O2 will dissolve in each 100 mL of blood for each millimeter of mercury of PO2. The oxygen-carrying capacity of lood, then, is the sum of oxygen bound to hemoglobin nd dissolved in plasma (Table 1). The bound fraction of oxygen in blood far outweighs he dissolved fraction under normal circumstances and s the source of oxygen used by our mitochondria. yperbaric oxygenation dramatically increases the parial pressure of oxygen and, by Henry’s law, increases he dissolved component of oxygen in our blood. The issolved fraction of oxygen under hyperbaric condiions may be 20 times the normal dissolved content Fig. 1). Fick’s law states that gas flow through a tissue s proportional to the difference in the partial pressures f the gases across a tissue. During hyperbaric treatents, oxygen can diffuse across greater distances and each relatively hypoxic tissues. In fact, the oxygen
