Popis: This chapter examines the critical responses to Walter de la Mare, and charts the decline, and recent upturn, in academic interest in his work. It begins by traces the critical unfashionability of de la Mare’s work to two Cambridge critics of the 1920s and 30s: I.A. Richards and F.R. Leavis, and considers various ostensive factors that caused them to turn against his poetry. It then proceeds to survey the critics and trends that followed, the critical neglect that came in in the 1970s and the beginnings of an upturn in critical interest of recent years. The essay concludes by revisiting the question that most trouble Leavis and de la Mare, that of de la Mare’s rhythm, finding unacknowledged factors that might have conditioned the two critics’ response that are as revealing about the critics themselves as they are about de la Mare.
