To assess the possible role of bacterial infection of the seminal fluid in male infertility, quantitative bacteriology of the seminal fluid and a detailed seminal analysis were performed on 58 men of three clinical groups. All the specimens except one yielded some bacterial growth, suggesting that the isolation of bacteria per se is not significant. Specimens from 20 men whose infertility was of unknown origin had a mean bacterial count of log 10 5.8 c.f.u./ml, significantly higher than that of a group of 19 men whose infertility was of known origin and a control group of 19 normal men (log 10 5.0 and 4.1 c.f.u./ml respectively). Keywords: Bacterial flora; Seminal fluid; Male infertility. |
