In the modern ‘24-h society,’ the sleep–wake cycle is progressively losing its close association with the dark/light alternation as work and leisure activities have progressively spread to the whole day and colonized the night hours. This causes interferences on circadian rhythms and sleep length and quality, which may have negative short- and long-term effects on performance efficiency, health, and well-being, with consequent high costs for individuals, companies, and the whole society. Several personal, organizational, and social factors interact in modulating the extent and severity of such impact on human life. |
