The purpose of the article is to determine the extent to which the Ulster and Shetlandic regional varieties of the Scots language correspond in their parameters to the definition of an island resettlement dialect, and also to show that the island nature of the areas to be considered is an important factor that has a favourable effect on the development of the dialects in question, as well as the entire Scots language as a whole. Methodology. The question of to what extent the concept of «island dialect» is applicable to the Ulster and Shetland dialects is considered in line with the ideas of Academician V.M.Zhirmunsky and his followers, who performed a comprehensive description of the phenomena of the linguistic island and the island resettlement dialect on the German evidence. It appears that the concept of an island resettlement dialect, considered here not only from the point of view of linguistic geography, but also from that of sociolinguistics, has a fairly broad content and can be successfully applied to language / dialect enclaves and exclaves within a multilingual and multiethnic state. Scientific novelty. In Scottish dialectology, there have been no descriptions of any Scottish dialects in terms of linguistic islands. This approach allows us to determine the most «healthy» and «successful» varieties within the domain of the Scots language or any other regional language, the system of which includes island dialects. Conclusion. The evidence considered in the work confirms the island character of the areas of Ulster-Scots and Shetlandic and substantiates the conclusion that it is a condition that counteracts the linguistic shift and favours the sustainable development of the idioms in question. |
