Popis: Infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV; formerly called HTLV-III/LAV), like many other infectious diseases, is associated with a wide spectrum of disease manifestations. Some individuals infected with HIV have remained asymptomatic, while others have developed mild constitutional symptoms, severe signs of disease, or AIDS, as defined by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC, Atlanta, Ga) [1]. The factors that influence the development of the various clinical manifestations remain largely unknown. To elucidate factors that may influence the clinical outcome of HIV infection, we initiated a prospective study of a group of men at high risk for acquiring this infection. We report here on 40 randomly selected, homosexual men from New York City, who were studied over a four-year period (1981-1985) and were evaluated serologically, immunologically, and clinically on an individual basis.
