Unusual histological appearances of the gingival tissue of a father and three daughters with familial gingival fibromatosis are described. The gingival lesions of all the patients were similar and showed a marked fibroblastic activity, with scattered small calcified particles and irregular trabeculae of bone, and ulceration and inflammation of the overlying epithelium. The appearances resembled those of the common non-familial fibrous epulis and contrasted strikingly with the dense, mature, relatively acellular bundles of collagen more usually encountered in familial gingival fibromatosis. |
