Comparing surgical repair with conservative treatment for degenerative rotator cuff tears: a randomized controlled trial. J Shoulder Elbow Surg. 2015 Aug;24(8):1274-81. ### Question: In patients with degenerative rotator cuff tears, how does surgical repair compare with conservative treatment with respect to functional outcomes? ### Design: Randomized (unclear allocation concealment), unblinded, controlled trial with 12 months of follow-up. ### Setting: A university hospital and 2 regional hospitals in the Netherlands. ### Patients: 56 patients (mean age, 61 years; 63% men) with degenerative, nontraumatic full-thickness rotator cuff tears were enrolled. Exclusion criteria included trauma associated with the onset of complaints, previous shoulder surgery, frozen shoulder, osteoarthritis of the glenohumeral or acromioclavicular joint, diabetes, cognitive disorders, and neurologic diseases affecting the upper extremities. 45 patients (80%) were included in the analysis. ### Intervention: Patients were allocated to surgery (n = 25) or conservative treatment (n = …
