Popis: | SummaryThe development, preparation and field evaluation of a highly effective formalin-killed vaccine against acute respiratory illnesses caused by viruses of the RI (Adenovirus) family has been described. The vaccine, prepared from infected tissue cultures of monkey renal epithelium, contained types 4 and 7 virus and was not injurious upon human injection. In human volunteers given a single 1 ml dose of vaccine intramuscularly, it induced high levels of neutralizing antibody. In 311 recruits, vaccinated at Fort Dix, N. J., it produced a marked reduction in the incidence of acute respiratory illness beginning one week after the initial dose of vaccine; only 4.8% of those receiving RI vaccine were hospitalized for respiratory illness compared with 23.8% of the control group of 313 which received placebo. |
