Congruence between masses and elites and the peaceful functioning of a state are key elements on which the legitimacy of a political system rests. In Belgium, it is often argued that both elements are missing. This chapter builds on candidate and voter surveys. It demonstrates that Belgian candidates show more radical feelings of identity and institutional preferences than Belgian voters. Peaceful functioning and congruence between masses and elites are therefore put at risk as candidates and voters appear to have distinct feelings of identity and institutional preferences, with more radical positions of candidates. |
