This resource is a simulation case intended for medical students and residents in emergency medicine. The case involves a patient who presents with a sore throat that progresses into a medication-induced methemoglobinemia after drainage. The scenario reviews the differential diagnosis of a sore throat as well as diagnosis and treatment of a peritonsillar abscess and methemoglobinemia. This simulation case provides an opportunity for medical students and residents to recognize and learn about the treatment of drug-induced methemoglobinemia in a lifelike scenario. Methemoglobinemia is a rare disorder, and simulation provides a safe way to learn the management of this toxicological emergency. |
