Bean plants which had been treated with 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acids labeled with carbon-14 separately in the carboxyl or methylene positions were separated into a number of chemical fractions. At low doses virtually all the applied 2,4-D is transformed within a few days into other substances, and the radioactive carbon becomes distributed among a variety of plant constituents, including acids, sugar, dextrins, starch, pectin, protein, and cell wall substances. A considerable portion of the C14 is present as a relatively volatile or unstable, ether-soluble, acidic material. |
