Macroscopic and microscopic evaluation and chemical profiling techniques have their own limitations for the authentication of plant species. DNA-based markers give the new directions to pharmacognosy. It is important to distinguish accurately the authentic plant sources for herbal drugs because adulteration and substitutions diminish their efficacy and reduce the trust of users as well as it is necessary to convert botanical materials into scientifically valid herbal drugs. Proper integration of molecular techniques as analytical tools with conventional knowledge will lead to the development of a comprehensive system of identification of medicinal plants that can be conveniently applied at the research and industry level for quality control of botanicals. The review derives the advantages of the DNA-based method for the purpose of correct identification of herbal material and discrimination of originals from the plant-derived adulterants. |
