Expansion of the family planning service in a municipal hospital resulted from a reassignment of personnel; the nurses role in this expansion is described. The nurses 4 functions include preparing the patient for the acceptance of family planning; this was usually done by a doctor. Another function was educating the patient a natural extension of the first function. The nurse discussed described and demonstrated the different family planning methods. By assigning these 2 roles to the nurse the doctor could make more efficient use of his time with the patient and concentrate on the emphasis of special family planning factors. The fourth function has proven to be one of the most important: the giving of reassurance and being available throughout the week for questions. This patient-nurse contact has yielded a singular source of satisfaction from the operation of the program. |
