Popis: | An analysis was made of 640 children who had electrolytes and urea investigations over a 9-month period. The indication, or rationale, for these tests was not clear in 241 (38%) cases. The results of the tests influenced patient management in only 58 (9%) cases. No note or comment about the results was recorded in the case-folder in 518 (81%) cases. The tests were assessed as useful in 124 patients. There was unnecessary repetition of the tests. It is concluded that there was a high degree of over-utilization and mis-utilization, the solution to which lies in continuing education of doctors, starting during undergraduate training. |
