Popis: THE OFFICIAL public and private institutions of Catalonia responsible for the organization and promotion of donation and transplantation, the Catalan Transplantation Organization (Organitzacio Catalana de Trasplantament or OCATT) and the Catalan Transplantation Society and Foudation (Societat and Fundacio Catalana de Trasplantament—SCT and FCT), hospital professionals specialized in organ procurement and transplantation, and secondary education professionals are working together on the elaboration of a project whose aim is to introduce an informative programme on donation and transplantation into secondary education. In 1998 the working party prepared two surveys on organ and tissue donation and transplantation in collaboration with the data collection and evaluation company EcoConsulting/IPSOS, one aimed at pupils between 16 and 18 years old and at parents with children between these ages and attending school; and the other aimed at secondary school teachers with pupils between 16 and 18 years old. The survey of youths and parents was performed during the month of May 1998 by telephone, and the sample was composed of 820 people distributed in proportion to the population of the Catalan provinces and towns and to the urban and rural areas. The questionnaire included open and closed questions, aimed at establishing the level of knowledge of the population on the different aspects of donation and transplantation: transplants performed, concept of death, transplantation legislation, results of transplants, etc; the individual stance in the face of donation and transplantation; and their position in relation to the possibility of including the subject in secondary education. The objectives were to answer the following questions in relation to the selected population: (1) What was the level of knowledge and general attitude of the selected population in relation to organ donation and transplantation? (2) What was the level of knowledge on the characteristics, functioning and results of transplantation? (3) What was their opinion on organ donation and transplantation? (4) What was their personal attitude to donation? and (5) What was their opinion in relation to the introduction of educational programmes on donation and transplantation into school programmes for 16 to 18 year old students? The sample selected was composed of 820 people, 411 schoolchildren residing in Catalonia between 16 and 18 years old with a male to female ratio of 1:1, and 409 parents residing in Catalonia with children between 16 and 18 years old with a father/mother ratio of 1:1. The selection of the sample was structured in proportion to the size of the population by provinces and towns. The survey consisted of a questionnaire organized into 29 questions and was performed by telephone by the data collection and evaluation company Eco-Consulting/IPSOS, by two interviewers not related to the subject, nor trained before the survey in the subject of donation and transplantation.
