Natural Resources, Inequality and Conflict
Popis: This chapter introduces the main topics and research questions addressed in this volume and presents a preview of the chapters. Through a multi-method approach, it seeks to contribute to the resource-conflict literature in three different areas: focusing explicitly on inequality and grievance-based explanations, zeroing-in on the thorny issue of exogeneity and going beyond oil and gas by analyzing non-fuel minerals separately. Based on the examples of resource-driven political violence in Aceh and Katanga, this chapter highlights the need to study these three areas in closer detail. Not only will this approach help fill important gaps in the literature, it will also contribute to policy making as it redirects attention toward future challenges.
