Popis: Pain low in the back is a common reason for patients to seek medical aid. Many backaches may be diagnosed roentgenologically as resulting from congenital anomalies, bony deformities, traumatic injuries to bone, arthritic changes, metastatic tumors or, occasionally, metabolic changes. In patients with such disorders the treatment prescribed depends on the pathologic changes found. However, there is a larger number of patients in whom the backache is not due to demonstrable bony change. In many of these patients the pain may be poorly localized. Although relief of pain, to a large extent, depends on removal of the cause, the mechanism of response to injury to the back affects the intensity and duration of pain. Therefore, these responses to injury influence treatment of painful injuries of the low back.
