Popis: | The estrogen binding capacity of 251 human breast cancers has been determined. The cytosol of the tumours was incubated with labelled estradiol-17-β and subjected to sucrose-gradient-density centrifugation. The difference in the radioactivity in the 8S area between samples incubated in the absence and presence of an estrogen antagonist was taken as a measure of the estrogen receptor content. The receptor content of the tumours varied over a wide range. Measurable amounts were present in 184 cases (73·1%). The content was 2–3 times higher in tumours from patients above 50 years than in those below this age. No relationship was found between the receptor content and the histological type of the tumours with the exception that tumours of the scirrhus type contained less receptors than other types of tumour. The receptor concentration was the same in different clinical stages of the disease suggesting that the receptor content of human breast cancers does not tend to decline with progression of the tumours. |
