The article explores cultural and linguistic aspects of the relationship between Russia, Armenia and Europe through the lens of quotation and intertextuality used as literary expedients. Andrei Bitov’s (1937-2018) Уроки Армении (Armenian lessons, first edition 1969) proves to be the ideal site to demonstrate the value of quotations in the context of the author’s prose. The analysis deals with two different aspects: i). literary and cultural intertextual references; ii). everyday language quotations. In both cases, the “language of the other” enters the text to build a bridge connecting apparently distant cultures. Particular attention is devoted to linguistic aspects and their subjective perception. |
