Popis: | Korter ink et al . [1] brought to the at tent ion of pseudothrombocytopenia in a newborn whose mother also had had this diagnosis. I would like to add peripheral smear examination to the authors’ studies which would be most helpful for this diagnosis. In addition, it would give us information on the morphology of the platelets which is as important as its counts [3]. I would like to reemphasize that peripheral smear (PS) should not be neglected despite of technical developments. Following the editorial comment about the cost and efficiency of the PS, I would like to add that it is a priceless diagnosis of several parasitic disorders as was brought to the attention recently thrombocytopenia related to anaplasmosis [2], malaria babesiosis, etc. Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura could also be suspected for the diagnosis by PS examination. It should be added that Arneth count related to granulocytes, spherocytosis, elliptocytosis, schistocytosis, and target cell, etc. can also be evaluated by only PS examination. Inmymind, none of the technical developments would help as much as PS. |
