Recent investigations have established that energy nonconserving events play a significant role in ion neutralization at solid surfaces. Such processes arise because the ionic states acquire a lifetime from the motion of the ion and its interaction with the band of the solid. Existing studies of lifetime effects have been limited to neutralization by continuum processes (resonant tunneling, Auger neutralization); here, we present a theory to include these lifetime effects on the core processes responsible for quasi-resonant electron transfer. We explore some implications of the formalism which relate to problems of current interest in ion-scattering spectroscopy. |
