The first question about the words which head this article is whether one of them should not be struck out. Nobody would think of discussing the outlook for ancient art; why, then, should we not be getting nearer the root of our problem if we inquired, simply about the outlook for art? That is, in fact, what I intend to do, but I keep the word “modern” in my title because it needs a bit of discussion itself, even at this late day. New York, for example, has a Museum of Art and also a Museum of Modern Art. That would seem to constitute an admission that the two things are not the same thing, for the Metropolitan, otherwise, ought to be called the Museum of Ancient Art, which no one, fortunately, thinks it should be. |
