Popis: | To test the hypothesis that natural tolerance to autoantigens may be destroyed by x rays, mice were irradiated with 400 or 500 r whole-body x-ray exposures on various dose schedules, and serial blood samples were examined with a direct Coombs test, looking for an auto-immunization to red blood-cell antigens. Appreciable fractions (25 to 86%) of the irradiated mice gave positive direct Coombs tests, but a small fraction (15%) of the unirradiated control mice also gave positive tests. Subsequent experiments showed that the positive tests were false, being due to reticulocytosis of phenylhydrazine and not to breakdown of natural tolerance. The probable reactions are discussed.
