Popis: | As Radiology professionals, we do not need to be convinced of the future applications for an Imaging Management, Archiving, and Communication System (IMACS). The dilemma we all face is how to generate support for a concept that promises many benefits in the long term, but very few benefits initially. How do we justify the need and the considerable financial investment for IMACS? The problem is that we can not cost justify a total IMACS through tangibles at the present, instead we must identify specific needs and problems we can improve that are related to service and support. It is given that our existing film systems are very labor intensive and fall short of the medical community’s expectations. We can not currently sell the vision of a “filmless” radiology imaging service, but with successful small steps we can guarantee support for the giant leaps of the future. It is important to promote the cost effectiveness and advantages of each step to ensure that administrative support becomes stronger with each accomplishment. It is our job to demonstrate those benefits that improve image quality, improve the speed and accuracy of interpretation, and give the referring physicians immediate access to the information. Hospital Administration will purchase a technology if there is: l a clear benefit to physicians l an opportunity for higher standards of care l profitability without being too costly Investments in IMACS technology can provide important tangible benefits other than financial savings.
