Popis: | Summary The β-thalassaemia trait was found in 23 out of 3002 random blood donors in an indigenous population of Western Nigerians. The haematological manifestations are described, and the inheritance was studied in selected families. In the same population 52 out of 1151 babies were found to have low levels (1–5.4%) of haemoglobin Bart's at birth. It is suggested that this may be a transient developmental abnormality, rather than a manifestation of α-thalassaemia. |
