The insertion depth difference is correlated with the relative pitch offset at the base of the electrode arrays. Symmetrical insertions produce a more usual pattern of bilateral speech results in noise than asymmetrical insertions at the 9-month stage. An asymmetrical insertion can produce greater patient dissatisfaction with their second device than symmetrical insertions. However, an asymmetrical insertion can still produce some binaural advantage. These case studies illustrate the importance of insertion depth in achieving a good outcome. An important surgical goal should be achieving a similar insertion depth as far as possible in cases of bilateral implantation. |
