Objective The purpose of this report is to, (1) Describe race-related disparities in infant mortality rates and their variation by state, and (2) Examine the role of social vulnerability in explaining the race-related disparities in infant mortality. Methods This study uses data from several secondary sources, with infant mortality data from CDC Wonder. Results Despite efforts by the United States on the local, state, and federal levels to lower the rates of infant mortality, the U.S. continues to be one of the highest ranking countries for infant mortality. Findings of the researched proved the cause of infant mortality is multifactorial and we could not find enough statistical evidence to provide a singular definitive cause of infant mortality. Conclusions Disparities among black and white infants cannot be narrowed to one determinant, but rather all factors seemed to be connected causing the gaps between infant mortality rates between the two races. Healthy People 2020 still seeks to reduce LBW, VLBW, total preterm births, and overall infant mortality rates. |
