Popis: | The occasion of my Presidential address brings to mind one of the first rules of dating, that “you go home with the guy who brought you.” My first professional presentation was at SSSP thirty years ago and your honoring me with the organization's presidency has capped a most rewarding, if highly irregular, career. It was in such a nostalgic mood that I confronted, over a year ago, the task of choosing a theme for this meeting, and my first thought was that the combination of the approaching millennial moment and my own imminent retirement afforded an opportunity to look back and see how far we—progressive sociologists, all—have come from the founding of SSSP almost a half century ago. As Hegel once observed: “The owl of Minerva spreads her wings at dusk.” So with your indulgence, I will mix both personal and professional reflections in this essay. |
