Popis: | 825 patients with pulmonary tuberculosis treated in the years 1955-60 have been followed up for periods of up to eighteen years. The majority received triple chemotherapy with sodium aminosalicylate (P.A.S.), isoniazid, and streptomycin. 33 patients (4%) relapsed with positive sputum cultures, and in 30 (91%) of these this was attributable to inadequate treatment as a result of poor cooperation. 58% of relapses were detected at routine follow-up clinics. It is suggested that prolonged observation of all adequately treated patients is unnecessary and that the resources of chest clinics should be concentrated on those whose treatment has been unsatisfactory. These results set a standard with which newer treatment regimens may be compared. |
