Popis: Emperor Julian’s orations and letters allow to study in a vivid way the link which exists between rhetoric as a powerful practice and the political power embodied by the orator, an emperor here and a pepaideumenos, in the Late Antiquity. As a matter of fact, at the beginning of his reign, Julian used tolerance and persuasion in the political as well as ideological and religious debate. So the importance of rhetorical technique can be understood better when analysing for instance the beginning of oration vii against Heracleios the Cynic. Here the emperor shows that he can fight against his opponent and make the «true » philosophy win through rhetoric, even if he argues that he is not a professional orator.
