The "Sustainable" power output of normal and conditioned LD has been determined in adult sheep. Long before by uninterrupted (24 hs/day) continuous low frequency or cyclic stimulation the muscle attains the final stage of transformation of fast isomyosins in the slow fatigue resistant type it became able to perform tetanic contractions at cardiac-like frequency with a sustainable effort of 5 wKg, a power output that being a significant fraction of that of the left is greater than that of the right ventricle. Our results in adult sheep confirm those in smaller mammals and validate the use of conditioned muscle in right hearth replacement and left hearth assistance, since scale factor uncertainties are minimized. |
