Popis: | Fetal components of the cat's placenta include cellular and syncytial trophoblast, capillaries, basal laminae, and connective tissue. These structures, which form an endotheliochorial labyrinth, are similar ultrastructurally to their counterparts in placentas of other species. A spectrum of transitional cells from cytotrophoblast to well-differentiated syncytium may be discerned. Maternal components include stout capillaries and giant cells, presumably of endometrial stromal origin. The trophoblast may have a prominent terminal web on its maternal surface. In addition, an extracellular amorphous deposit usually, but not always, separates trophoblast from maternal capillaries and giant cells. In endotheliochorial placentas, the approximation of apparently viable maternal and fetal elements is closer than in hemochorial but less close than in epitheliochorial forms. The fetomaternal cellular proximity may be inversely correlated with the invasiveness of the trophoblast, which is of intermediate degree in typical endotheliochorial placentation. |
