A myriad of disorders may lead to a wet child. Incontinence is not at all unusual in the pediatric population. Indeed, incontinence is not a disease but rather a symptom of an underlying process whose cause may be obvious or obscure. Incontinence is expected in infancy and only becomes abnormal after the child becomes mature enough to have gained appropriate urinary awareness and control. The process by which normal urinary control is achieved requires normal anatomy, neurologic and behavioral development, as well as social awareness, a complex process that is incompletely understood. The focus in this article is on the normal child who presents with urinary incontinence after the age at which toilet training should have been accomplished. |
